10/3/2023 0 Comments Titanfall 2 ghostrunner off![]() It’s strange, then, that you don’t actually get to drive BT-7274 for much of the campaign. Titanfall 2 elects to focus on the relationship between man and machine, and it does an admirable job of this most of the time. Fortunately, the few interesting characters are also the ones who receive the most exposure – Namely, Cooper and his Titan, a chatty thing named BT-7274 who has more personality than most of the other characters combined. The friendlies on the Militia side are about as forgettable, to the point where I had trouble remembering their names. There is a rogue's gallery of villains, who cackle and plot your demise over radio chatter, and then they are dispatched about as quickly as they are introduced. The story is ultimately quite thin and there are hardly any interesting characters of note. This is not to say that these things were unwelcome, but none of them added much value to the game, either. ![]() I did not expect any of this from Titanfall 2. There is also a long sequence inside a facility that resembles Aperture Science from Portal a sprawling manufactory that stamps out synthetic environments like a 3D printer. ![]() The dry wartime dramatics of the first game are gone instead, Titanfall 2 elects to go balls-out sci-fi with weird tangents about alien artifacts and time travel. It isn’t long before the storytelling takes some bizarre twists and turns, however. The early parts of the game are a blast, and the story starts off strong. Once you manage to repair your Titan, though, all bets are off – it’s time to kick some ass and get revenge. Lucky you! Then you get to spend the next hour scrabbling together parts for it, sneaking around the gorgeous jungles of an alien world while fighting off feral wildlife and IMC soldiers. As you absorb his rank, you also take possession of his Titan. In the chaos, a young rifleman named Jack Cooper (you) receives a field promotion after his commanding officer is killed. So we’re back to square one, and the Militia and IMC are battling it out again just like old times. This means that the hero of the first game, who sacrificed his life to ensure that victory, apparently died in vain. This was supposed to turn the tide in the Militia’s favour, but it seems that the developers decided to retcon the story a bit and say that the iconic "Battle of Demeter" wasn’t really as big a deal as we would’ve liked to believe. This cut off their access to the outer reaches of space (known as "The Frontier"), which the good guys consider their territory. At last word, the valiant Militia forces (the good guys) had struck a decisive blow against the evil Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) by destroying one of their primary refueling bases. ![]() The story of the campaign takes place sometime after the conclusion of Titanfall. This review will be divided into two sections, as the single player and multiplayer aspects are completely different animals. Most notably, however, it features a single player campaign, which the first game lacked. It features more robots, more action, and more silly parkour. Don't recommend."Just another run-of-the-mill twitch shooter." Much of this makes the repetitive nature of the game frustrating instead of fun in my opinion. Puzzle levels are boring in both design and aesthetic. Reflecting bullets is inconsistent in whether or not it hits the enemy, which is just lame in this type of game. For an example of good visual design for this gameplay, play Mirror's Edge (not saying this should be that, but take some inspiration at least of what works). Visual design of parkour sections is cluttered, making it difficult to see where to go outside of the walls covered in giant arrows (unimmersive). Sound/visual design does ♥♥♥♥ all to inform the player of danger outside of their field of vision. Extremely simplistic AI with ridiculous aim that appears to work through walls. Can't jump out of a slide, why not? Every other game I've played with a slide mechanic allows this. Sounds cool, but because of the execution it isn't. A mix of Hotline Miami and Mirror's Edge.
